The National Food Security Act came into the act on 10 September 2013 by the Government of India. The NFSA scheme was deployed in Assam to offer benefits to the people of the society. target was also set to offer benefits to more than 55 lakh families through this scheme.
Post the implementation of the NFSA scheme in the state in 2015 by the central government, the ration card holders were selected for priority families at Rs 3 per 5 kg every month and every family of AAY 35 kg at Rs 3 per kg. Through this scheme, the people of the state were able to purchase rations at the lowest rates.
The Assam Government, through the Public Distribution Scheme (PDS) of the Nation Food Security Act, 2013 issue ration cards to eligible families living in Assam. A ration card is a document by which families of low income or the ones living below the poverty line can get food grains at a subsidized rate. The Ration cards are now issued under the NFSA Scheme in Assam.
The ration card is an important document beneficial for residents of the state. By producing the ration cards at particular stores, the residents can get proper food items at subsided rates. The residents can also avail advantages of subsidized food using the ration card in India. Now, the state government even distributes a nationalized ration card to the citizens of India.

There are six main kinds of ration cards that are offered by the state government. The list of these ration cards include:
Antyodaya ration card is offered to the families belonging to the poorest section of society and don’t have a fixed/ stable income. Mostly old age men, women, unemployed people, and labourers fall into this category. The residents of Assam having a per capita income of less than Rs 250 per month are eligible to apply for this ration card. To get this ration card, the applicants have to submit a duly attested application form, the form must be attested by the municipal councilor or village sarpanch. The residents have to submit two passport-size family photographs and an affidavit duly specified.
Under the Antyodaya Ration Card, the cardholders will get 35 kg of rice at Rs 3 per kg
The families belonging to the below poverty line category are eligible to apply for a BPL Ration card. The families whose annual income is Rs ₹27,000 falls into this category.
The citizens of the state belonging to the above poverty line category are eligible to apply for an APL ration card. Under this category of ration card, there’s no income limit, so all interested applicants can apply.
The families belonging to the above poverty line category will get these ration cards. Certain special subsidies are provided to these cardholders, the cardholders can buy kerosene from ration shops at subsidized rates. Also, the families falling under this category who do not have gas or LPG connection can apply for this ration card
Orange ration cards will be issued to those families who live above the poverty line criteria. The income criteria to get an Orange ration card varies from state to state.
This ration card will be issued to those citizens who belong to the below poverty line category. To get a Yellow ration card each state has different annual income criteria based on the factors of poverty line
